Vintage Spools in Liberty

"Vintage Spools Quilt"

From the moment I first saw this quilt in the Liberty Love book I knew I wanted to make it.

But it's one of those quilts where it's not just the pattern that you fall in love with but the fabrics.
The pattern calls for 100 spools in 50 different fabrics and of course the fabrics are all Liberty Lawn fabrics. So not only was it going to take me some time to build my stash of Liberty fabrics, there was the cost.  (A FQ of a Liberty Lawn Fabric is $11 plus)  Then a few weeks ago I was surfing Ebay I found two "Scrap Bags".  It seemed like a bit if a risk but a risk I am so glade I took.

There was a great variety and I was so happy. I after a bit of a play I managed to turn the above into ...

That gives me 40 different fabrics cut ready to go.  I have about 14 doubles so that takes me to 54 / 100 spools covered but it doesn't end there  :)  I have been back to ebay a few times, with no luck especially at the price I am willing to pay for a "Scrap Bag" because it really is a bit like a lucky dip.   But I kept going back.

And I found some.
80 different prints are all heading my way and should be here in the next 2 - 3 weeks from the UK.
Fingers crossed that this quilt might just end up having 100 different prints in it.
To say I am excited would be a little bit of an understatement.
Better start thinking about the background fabrics and the "wood" part of the spools.
I seem to be in the planning process for a couple of projects at the moment.
I will share the others with you soon.

Do you like Liberty fabrics?

hugs Sharon

  6. You are definitely a woman on a mission. Is the "wood" all the same or different fabrics? I am not a huge Liberty fan, but they always look good in quilts.

  17. Rats, now I have to buy this book too. I went through a Liberty lawn buying phase a few years ago, and I still haven't done anything with the fabric. Thus far, I hadn't seen anything really inspiring from this book, but I agree, this quilt immediately stands out!

Well, I suppose it is good, it will tick the "Liberty" box and the "spools" box with one quilt!
